Lim Siang Gui completed the first leg of the "Running Towards Gold" 2200km charity run in Kedah.

(Alor Setar, 2nd) Cancer awareness advocate and runner Lim Siang Kwee, with the support of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), officially launched the "Run for Gold" charity run and arrived in Kedah yesterday, completing the first state leg of the run.
On March 28th of this year, he started a 2200-kilometer running challenge from the Malaysian National Cancer Society's "House of Hope" in Penang to raise RM600,000 for children with cancer for the Malaysian National Cancer Society, while also raising public awareness of children with cancer and their caregivers.
He plans to tour all 11 states and federal territories of the peninsula within 90 days.

Lim Shyang Gui arrived in Alor Setar, Kedah yesterday and was received by Aurelius Hospital, where he was personally greeted by the hospital's CEO, Ahmad Samir, and Alor Setar Mayor Datuk Abdul Ghafar.
Aurelius Hospital, as a partner, will provide funding for the charity run and accompany Lim Siang Kwee on several stops, including visits to its Nilai and Kuantan branches.
This journey of running for hope began on March 28 and is expected to end on June 22. Lin Xianggui plans to run 25 to 35 kilometers each day, with rest days scheduled, and two support personnel will accompany him throughout the journey to ensure safety and supplies.

He will also return to Malacca on June 22 to celebrate his 67th birthday. This is also where his wife, Goh Yu Lee, grew up.
Lim Shyang Guey and his wife originally planned to return to Malaysia, where they grew up, from Hong Kong after retirement, and travel all over the Malay Peninsula to complete a belated "life checklist" as a gift for the second half of their lives.
However, fate took a cruel turn in August 2024 when 63-year-old Wu Yuli passed away from a rare form of gallbladder cancer. From diagnosis to death, only four months had passed. Heartbroken, Lin Xianggui chose to turn his grief into action, commemorating his wife through charity runs and engaging in charitable work.

Veteran runner on a 2,200km push for childhood cancer awareness

CANCER awareness advocate and endurance runner Lim Shyang Guey, supported by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), continues his remarkable Run for Gold journey – a 2,200km run across peninsular Malaysia to raise awareness and funds for children living with cancer. Flagging off on March 28 from the NCSM-MPPP Home of Hope at Rose Avenue in Penang, Lim has now reached Alor Setar, Kedah, marking the first official state stop of the campaign. This milestone signals the start of a series of community engagements planned across all 11 states and federal territories.

In Alor Setar, Lim is being hosted by Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar, where he will meet the public through cancer awareness and educational activities. The stop provides a vital platform to amplify messages on early detection, timely intervention, and the importance of sustained support for children affected by cancer. Lim was welcomed by Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar chief executive officer Dr Ahmad Syamir Abdullah and Alor Star mayor Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya.

As a partner of Run for Gold, the hospital has pledged financial support and will accompany Lim at several key stops, including upcoming visits to Aurelius Hospital Nilai in Negri Sembilan and Aurelius Hospital Kuantan in Pahang. Aurelius has a cancer care centre, offering comprehensive treatment to fight cancer. Over the course of his journey, the Penang-born Lim aims to run between 25km and 35km daily, with scheduled rest days. The full route is expected to take around 90 days, culminating in his return in time to celebrate his 67th birthday on June 22, 2026.

More than a physical challenge, the run carries deep personal meaning. The journey was originally a shared dream between Lim and his late wife Joo Lee, who passed away after battling cancer before they could undertake it together.

Throughout the run, Lim will lodge in homestays, shared accommodation or with local hosts, allowing him to connect closely with communities along the route. These interactions create opportunities to share key messages about cancer awareness while listening to the experiences of families affected by the disease. At major stops such as Alor Setar, community engagement events will be organised in collaboration with NCSM, supporters, caregivers, survivors and local partners, strengthening grassroots awareness and outreach efforts.

The Run for Gold initiative draws inspiration from the Gold Ribbon – the universal symbol of childhood cancer awareness, representing the preciousness of children and the resilience of young patients and their families.
