Early Detection Saves Lives: Your Guide to Breast Self-Examination (BSE)

At Aurelius Hospital Negeri Sembilan, we believe that knowledge is your first line of defense against breast cancer. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a simple, yet powerful tool that empowers you to understand your body and detect early signs of change.

This October, during Pink OctoberBreast Cancer Awareness Monthwe invite you to join our "Hunt That Lump" campaign. Taking just a few minutes of your time each month can make a life-saving difference.

Why Perform a Breast Self-Examination?

Regular BSE helps you become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to spot any unusual changes early. Early detection of breast cancer significantly increases the success rate of treatment and saves lives.

The 5-Step Guide to a Thorough Self-Check

Follow these simple steps to perform your examination with confidence.

Step 1: The Visual Inspection

Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look closely for any unusual signs, such as:

  • Nipple retraction, redness, or puckering

  • Dimpling or scaling of the skin

  • Any nipple discharge (noting the colour and source)

Step 2: Observe the Shape

Lean forward slightly, pulling your shoulders and elbows forward as if hugging someone. Look for any changes in the contour or shape of your breasts.

Step 3: Check the Underside

Raise your arms and place your hands behind your head. This position allows you to clearly see the underside of your breasts.

Step 4: Feel for Lymph Nodes

In the same leaning-forward position, use your fingers to check your underarm area and the areas above and below your collarbone for any enlarged lymph nodes, which may feel like a small, firm kernel or bean.

Step 5: The Hands-On Examination

Raise one arm and use the pads (not the tips) of three or four fingers on your opposite hand to examine the breast. Use three levels of pressure—light, medium, and firm—as you move in a circular motion.

Choose Your Pattern:
To ensure you cover the entire breast area, you can follow one of these three patterns:

  • (A) Lines: Move your fingers up and down in vertical lines.

  • (B) Circles: Move in concentric circles, gradually working your way toward the nipple.

  • (C) Wedges: Examine the breast in wedge-shaped sections.

Areas to Cover:
Ensure you check the entire breast area, from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your breastbone to your underarm, including the bra line.

Helpful Tips for an Effective BSE

  • Find Your Position: You can perform the examination while standing in front of a mirror, lying flat on your back (with a pillow under the shoulder you are examining), or even in the shower.

  • Make it Easy: Many women find it easiest to feel their breasts when the skin is wet and slippery. Use soap and water in the shower or a bit of body lotion if you're examining dry skin.

What to Feel For

During your exam, be on the lookout for any unusual lump, hard knot, thickening, or change in texture under the skin. If you notice anything unusual, do not panic. Many lumps are not cancerous, but it is essential to get them checked by a healthcare professional.
