Medical Specialties
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Sight-threatening diseases commonly arise from either ocular or systemic conditions. Signs of systemic disease may be evident on the outer surface of the eye, such as eyelids, conjunctiva and cornea. It may also appear at the middle of the eye and at the back of the retina. Ocular diseases are those that affect the vision in patients of all ages. Some of the common ocular diseases include cataracts, red-eye, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, blepharitis and dry eye syndrome.
